For a Meaningful Christmas
Are you feeling a bit hustled, bustled, and overwhelmed? Isn’t it easy to become overwhelmed by the to-do list at this time of year?
It’s only been the past few years that I’ve embraced the concept of Advent season and Advent Devotionals. They have added a depth of meaning to the Christmas season, and I’d love to share my favorite Advent devotionals.

The Women of Christmas by Liz Curtis Higgs
As always, I love Liz Curtis Higgs and the freshness and new eyes she brings to our familiar stories and passages. In this lovely devotional, she looks at the Advent through the eyes of Mary, Elizabeth, and Anna. She helps us draw parallels and make relevant application to our own lives. Beautiful, fresh, reverent. I highly recommend this devotional.
Loving My Actual Christmas by Alexandra Kuykendall
Subtitled “An Experiment in Relishing the Season”, this book is equal parts memoir, devotional, and journaling prompts. How I wish I’d had it when I was a young mother creating Christmas memories for my children!
I highly recommend this book for everyone, and will be re-reading my copy this year. If you like her writing style, I can also recommend Loving My Actual Life, and have pre-ordered her newest book Loving My Actual Neighbor. Sounds intriguing, doesn’t it?
The Greatest Gift by Ann Voskamp
In this lovely, thought-provoking book Ann Voskamp breaks her Advent studies into daily readings complete with application questions and space for journaling. This is a beautiful study of the lineage of Jesus, and she offers free downloadable “Jesse Tree” ornaments to accompany each reading. Lovely and moving.
For those of you celebrating with children, I think you will love The Wonder of the Greatest Gift and Unwrapping the Greatest Gift. These beautiful picture books are actually interactive experiences.
Treasuring God in Our Traditions by Noel Piper
A lovely book full of ideas on making God part of our family traditions. This isn’t technically an Advent devotional, but it’s full of great ideas for celebrating Advent and for proclaiming God in our every day moments as well as the special ones.

- Sign up to receive each day’s study in your inbox. Here is the signup link.
- They also have beautiful, high quality copies of each study for sale in their shop. I enjoy these studies greatly. Here’s the shop link.

I’ve found two Advent devotionals I’m loving this year.
Preparing for Christmas by Richard Rohr which has super short readings that are very thought-provoking
And Wounded in Spirit by David Bannon (I think it’s out new this year) which pairs a daily Advent meditation with famous paintings and inspiring quotations from literature and theology
Oh, WOW! Those both sound wonderful.
