Amy Carmichael: a young woman determined to be a missionary
In 1887, a young woman surrendered her life to missions work, despite her ill health. After being rejected for service in China, she briefly served in Japan and Sri Lanka before landing in Bangalore, India. She would serve in India for the remaining fifty-three years of her life without furlough.
Amy was instrumental in founding Dohnavur Fellowship. Its original mission was to rescue young Indian girls from a life of forced prostitution. After a number of years they also began rescuing young men, some of whom were children born to temple prostitutes. Dohnavur is still in existence today, independently run by Indian nationals.
As a young woman with several young children, I was intrigued and encouraged by this faithful missionary who acted as “Amma” to many, many children, constantly giving and serving patiently for decades. I’m happy to recommend her works to you.
Elisabeth Elliot wrote a wonderful biography of Amy Carmichael, A Chance to Die. I highly recommend this as the place to begin.
Gold Cord: The Story of a Fellowship, by Amy Carmichael. This beautiful work tells the story of the Dohnavur Fellowship.
Mimosa is the story of one of the children rescued by Amy Carmichael.
Illness Changes the Course of Amy’s Ministry
After a fall, Amy spent the remaining two decades of her life as an invalid in great pain. During this time, she continued her administration of the ministry and her direct ministry with the children. She also spent much of her time writing. Some of these books were written specifically to encourage those who were ill and suffering. Some were published during her life; others were gathered from her diaries and letters and published after her death. I believe you will draw encouragement from any of her writings.
