Favorite Things February 2021
A Few of My Favorite Things | February 2021
“A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” Proverbs 17:22
Is Winter feeling a little long? Tired of discouraging news? Me too! I’m reviving my “Favorite Things” series in an effort to encourage you and to remind myself of things that are bringing me joy right now. Let’s dig in!
Favorite Things: Water! Heat! Electricity!
Woo hoo! This part of the country doesn’t have much severe winter weather, but this winter has been a bit of a doozy. First, we had a humongous ice storm that destroyed trees all over the metro. Recently we’ve had bitterly cold weather and then storms with 11 inches of snow. That’s a LOT around here. Our infrastructure isn’t set up to handle the power and snow removal demands, and residents really aren’t set up with cold weather gear.
There were burst pipes, flooding, car wrecks, electric and water outages all over the metro. We only lost power briefly in a planned rolling blackout, and didn’t have any burst pipes. It’s all over now and highs in the 60s have pretty much melted all the snow. I’m newly appreciative of electricity, water, heat, and sunshine.
Favorite Things: Soup
We’re soup lovers around here anytime the temps are the least bit chilly. Lately I’ve been loving this Hearty Crockpot Taco Soup from thechunkychef.com. I make this on the stovetop instead of crockpot, and actually leave out the meat altogether and add an extra can of beans. I’m mostly vegetarian and hubby has cut back on his meat consumption since his heart attack. Read more about that here: When Hope Is Hard. Also: How to Cultivate Hope in Difficult Seasons
We like this topped with some avocado and a little shredded cheddar, and served with a green salad and some toasted naan bread. Yummy!
Favorite Things: Encouraging Music
I’ve started listening to music on Spotify on our Smart TV. Here’s a link to one of my favorite playlists, Instrumental Hymns. I have a subscription, but you can listen for free!
Favorite Things February 2021: Walks
Yay! After a couple weeks of being housebound, we’ve been able to get out for walk for the past two days. I find that walks in nature really spark awe and wonder in me. I frequently use my walks as prayer time or quietly sing hymns and worship songs. Today my parents came over and walked with me and Luma, our Golden Retriever. Then we sat on the patio and had a nice visit.
Favorite Things: Studying the Book of James
Another thing that has brought joy to me lately has been studying the book of James. My husband teaches an adult Sunday school class at our church, and we’ve been in the book of James for the past couple of weeks. Joe encouraged us to read through the book several times, and I notice new things each time through.
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance.” James 1:2-3

When the weather outside is frightful…you can be sure I’m drinking hot tea, reading books, writing, or watching some of my favorite movies. There are so many good Jane Austen adaptations out there. Here are some of my favorites:
