St. Patrick’s Day Fun
March Care Packages/Grammy Boxes
Who’s up for some St. Patrick’s Day Fun? I know many of you are long distance grandparents or parents of service members stationed far away or deployed. If so, you’re probably always looking for ways to connect.
I love to send care packages. When our grandchildren started moving away, I began writing letters and sending care packages. We call them Grammy Boxes, and I enjoy creating them just as much as the grands enjoy receiving them. (Read more about long distance grandparenting here, here, and here.)
It’s fun to think up themes for the boxes, and I especially enjoy celebrating every holiday. For St. Patrick’s Day, I prepared a St. Patrick’s Day Fun Tea Party in a Box.
Gather Supplies

The USPS flat rate boxes are a bargain for care packages, especially when your people are far away. Generally I choose the medium size box, which comes in a square box or a flat rectangle. Sometimes picture books, coloring books, and magazines fit better in the rectangle. I stock a supply of boxes in all sizes; the boxes themselves are free at the post office. Of course, you’ll have to pay to actually ship them.
In addition to the boxes, I keep a supply of strong mailing tape, colored tissue paper, and sharpies in assorted colors and thicknesses.
Where I Shopped for St. Patrick’s Day Fun Care Package
Here’s the fun for me: I’m constantly on the lookout for items to send, everywhere I go. I sometimes print free coloring pages off the internet, find giveaway promotional items, bake cookies or granola, or create small crafts.
Generally, I find items at the Target Dollar Spot, the grocery store, and Dollar Tree. Greeting cards, gift tissue paper, stickers, and party decor are always available at Dollar Tree.

Box Up, Address, and Add a Little Sparkle!
I like to decorate the outside of the boxes with funny little messages, drawings, and love notes. It’s always fun to have an excuse to play with art supplies!
