Invited: The Power of Hospitality in an Age of Loneliness by Leslie Verner
A hospitality book that digs deep, this is a call to build community and belonging. Leslie Verner “invites” us to “see and be seen” in our neighborhoods, churches, and daily activities. Much more than a call to invite someone over for dinner, this is a mandate to welcome others into our lives.
At the back of the book you’ll find Scripture to study and questions for thought connected to each chapter. You’ll also find an extensive list of hospitality ideas, tips for simple hosting and an outstanding list of recommended reading. Highly recommended for solo or group study.

Loving My Actual Neighbor by Alexandra Kuykendall
This lovely book is based on seven principles from 2 Peter 1. The author fleshes out ways to build meaningful relationships with our actual physical neighbors in our community, on our street. I especially love the questions for reflection and focal verse at the end of each chapter.

Girls’ Club by Sarah, Sally, and Joy Clarkson
Community. Friendship. We all long for it, but in the midst of our frazzled lives, isn’t it hard to find?
This encouraging multiple-points-of-view book is full of simple ideas to be a good friend and find good friends. A perfect group read! I’ve actually long been toying with the idea of hosting a book club–on the blog and also in real life. This book will be my first choice to read! (Does a book club sound like a fun idea to you? Would you participate if I do it on the blog? Let me know!)

Back Roads to Belonging by Kristen Strong
As a military wife, Kristen Strong has moved a lot. She has struggled to find a place of belonging. Oh, how I relate to this struggle. This practical and encouraging book will bring peace and help to you.
Placemaker by Christine Purifoy
“Cultivating Places of Comfort, Beauty and Peace.” This relaxing, gentle book is a call to cultivate welcoming, restful, beautiful places in our lives. Full of Biblical illustrations and links, this is not a book about interior decorating. Instead, it’s about recognizing, planting, and cultivating beauty in our homes and lives.
Rhythms of Renewal by Rebekah Lyons
Subtitled “Trading Stress and Anxiety for a Life of Peace and Purpose”. Sign. Me. Up. Right? This book is full of practical ideas to rest, restore, connect, and create. I highly recommend it, and especially enjoyed the journaling prompts at the end of each short chapter. There is also a companion workbook which you can order here: Rhythms of Renewal Study Guide.
Beholding and Becoming by Ruth Chou Simons
Ahhh, such a lovely book full of Truth. Beholding and Becoming is a call to behold God in his glory and beauty, and become ever more Christlike. It is a soul-stirring reminder to set our hearts on what is truly worthy of worship. I love the emphasis on faithfulness, the importance of the mundane, and the calling to remain. Highly recommended, and also perfect for gift giving. You can find the companion book here: Beholding and Becoming Guided Companion. You will find more Ruth Chou Simons books here.
Fearfully and Wonderfully Made by Dr. Paul Brand & Philip Yancey
Wow! Dr. Paul Brand was a missionary to India, a physician specializing in the treatment of leprosy. This book marvels at the intricacies of the human body and makes correlations to our faith life. Beautiful book. I kept stopping to read sections aloud to my husband.
Safe and Sound: Standing Firm in Spiritual Battles by David Powlison
This last book by David Powlison was written as he battled stage 4 cancer. My copy is highlighted and has numerous notes in the margin. It is not just a treatise on spiritual warfare, but a battle call to actively take light to the darkness. Every moment we are in a battle for whom we will serve. Only we can make that choice. This book is a call to choose wisely. You can find more David Powlison books here. I highly recommend his writing!
Transforming Your Thought Life by Sarah Geringer
If you’re like me, you battle negative thinking. Fear, anxiety, and worry often threaten to keep me up at night and hijack my day. For me personally, this is one of the greatest battles of my life, and has become more difficult as my children became adults. This highly practical and encouraging book teaches us practical methods to stop these negative cycles and renew our minds with thoughts rooted in God’s Word.
