Year of LESS 2020 Word of the Year
Year of Less | 2020 Word of the Year
Year of Less?
It sounds odd, doesn’t it? Counter-intuitive. Out of step with First World culture.
I’ll explain my “why”, my purpose, and my process…and recommend some great books I’ll be reading or re-reading this year, in case you discover you’re in need of a little less.

Year of Less | Why I’m Choosing Less
I have shared that last year was a rough one for me. You can read more about that in these places. Apparently, many of you are in the same boat, since these were some of my most highly read and shared posts.

7 Lessons Learned in My Difficult Season
I’ve realized that I fell into many unhelpful habits during this season, habits that have not served me well. Unhealthy eating, lack of routine, increased social media and tv bingeing, and poor sleep habits…these things are not adding value to my life.
This isn’t how I want to live.
Year of Less Theme Verse
As I’m working through how to live with more purpose, I’m taking Hebrews 12:1 as my theme verse.
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.” Hebrews 12:1
My goal isn’t just to embrace “Less” for the sake of less, but to lay aside the weights and sin that are hindering me from living with purpose, from running with endurance.
I hope to set aside the distractions that are weighing me down, and live with purpose and intention.
Less…what?
Here are a few of the things I will actively attempt to wrangle into submission in the upcoming year:
- Television/Netflix/Prime viewing
- Social media overuse
- Overeating
- Eating too much junk food
- Impulse purchases
- Unhealthy sleep patterns
- Worry/anxiety/obsessive thoughts
I think we can all agree that these are areas where “Less” is a good goal!
Year of Less: Here’s Where I Started
First goal I’m tackling: Less Sugar!
My husband has joined me in a 40 Day Sugar Fast, which we started January 5. I purchased The 40-Day Sugar Fast by Wendy Speake. She is also hosting a group sugar fast, which she does annually. You can read about that here.

Less of the weights and sins that so easily hinder us – that sounds wonderful! I love that verse….and the practical applications you drew to my mind. Praying it is a blessed year of “less” for you!!
